Nasal polyps are growths of tissue originating from the sinus cavities and the nasal passages. These growths hang down from the sinus cavities into the nose, much like a bunch of grapes. The exact cause of polyps is unknown. However, they are more common in people with allergies. Patients primarily complain of nasal congestion, runny nose, and loss of smell. These patients also experience recurrent sinusitis attacks.
HOW ARE NASAL POLYPS TREATED
The most effective treatment for nasal polyps is the long-term use of corticosteroid sprays. Sometimes corticosteroids may also be administered orally or via injection. If the patient shows signs of an acute infection, antibiotic use may be necessary. If there is no improvement despite medication, the polyps must be removed via endoscopic sinus surgery. However, patients must continue to use corticosteroid sprays even after surgery. Recurrence of the condition after surgery is not an uncommon occurrence.
