A deviated septum—a noticeable deviation of the nasal septum from the midline toward one side—can cause nasal congestion. This condition is usually caused by a previous nasal injury. If the resulting deformity causes nasal congestion, it can be corrected surgically. Enlargement of the nasal turbinates—the soft tissues located on either side of the nose—can also cause nasal congestion. Treatment involves using nasal sprays that reduce the size of the turbinates; if these are ineffective, procedures aimed at reducing the size of the turbinates are performed.
